Summer is here when the Common Darter dragonflies begin to hatch. This male is resting on the seed head of an early flowering plant, on a thundery afternoon in mid July - one of the very best times to see and photograph these amazing insects.
The subject stands out against the smooth yet vibrant summer background.

it's amazing how "artistically" his body seems to be designed and decorated, does he even know how good looking he is?:) seriously these dragonfly shots are all amazing in their clarity, Andy, thanks for sharing this.

65 million years of evolution will do that for you Jim! That's how long they've been around for - though some were a little bigger according to the fossil record - 3 or 4 foot wing span - no need for a macro lens!
