Description
An extreme close-up of a Common Darter, or Darner, Dragonfly perched on a young bracken frond. The image shows the complex structure of its compound eyes and the facial hairs, and the menacing spikes on the forelegs used for holding prey - all details that we fail to notice when we see one flying at the lakeside on a warm summers afternoon.

The pictures of insects always creep me but then when i look at them for real they have astounding beauty that one would never see otherwise. When i was a small child i climbed our back yard fence and when i got to the top there was a glowing bug there. I was thrilled at this as i had no idea there were things in my back yard like this. I still at 63 get a smile when i think of this.
